Local Interest

Medical Lake Washington's early history provides the inspiration for its name and reputation as a health spa and vacation area. Many Native Americans in the area believed in the healing properties of the lake water, and in 1872 a French-Canadian, settler named Andrew Lefevre named it lake "Lac de Medicine" or Medical Lake.

Local businesses benefited from Medical Lake's reputation by marketing locally made soaps, salts, and powders - which they claimed would cure most health problems - and promoting the area as a spa and vacation destination. As the word spread more people began to visit and move to the area to experience the healing powers of the lake for themselves, and Medical Lake flourished as a popular vacation destination and growing community from the 1880's to the early 1900's.

The tourism boom eventually ended as the lake was dredged of most of its minerals deposits and began to show the effects of the adjacent land developments and although Medical Lake retained its recreational value, many people who supported the tourism industry left the area.

Then in 1943 Fairchild Air Force Base was built just five miles north of Medical Lake bringing the community and the region new economic growth. Over the years the City and State have done much to improve the lake quality in attempts to restore it to its original pristine state.

Today Medical Lake's many unique features like abundant wildlife, very seasonable weather, recreational trail system, and its close proximity to Fairchild Air Force Base and Spokane make it a great community, nice place to visit, and a great place to live.
